Making room for Christmas in Benfleet: where to put everything before the guests arrive

Every year it creeps up the same way. The tree needs a corner, the spare room has turned into a storeroom, and family are coming to stay from Boxing Day. Then the presents arrive and there's even less floor than before. If you live in Benfleet, Hadleigh, Canvey or Thundersley, here's a simple way to get your house ready for Christmas without spending December tripping over boxes.

Start with the spare room

The spare room is usually where the clutter ends up, and it's usually where your guests will sleep. Give it one afternoon. Make three piles: keep in the house, take to the charity shop or tip, and put away until the new year. Be honest with that last pile. The exercise bike, the box of baby clothes you're saving and the paddling pool don't need to live in the house over winter.

Clear the garden and the shed

If your garden furniture, cushions, barbecue or kids' bikes have been under a cover since September, winter damp won't do them any favours. Plenty of sheds around Castle Point leak a bit in a wet January. Cleaning things down and storing them somewhere indoor and dry means they're ready to come straight back out in spring. It also frees up the shed for the things you actually need in winter.

Make space for the new before it arrives

A bit of space before Christmas means you won't be hunting for somewhere to put a new bike, a big Lego set or a games chair on the 26th. Older toys the children have grown out of can go to storage for now, and you can decide later whether to keep, sell or pass them on, without an argument in December.

Keep the Christmas things together

Once the decorations come down in January, put them in clearly labelled boxes and store them all in one place. Next year, they're easy to find and you won't have to search the loft for them.

What size do you need for a Christmas declutter?

Most people clearing for the holidays need less space than they expect. These are rough guides:

  • 20 sq ft: Roughly a large walk-in cupboard. Boxes, suitcases, a few bags and the decorations.

  • 30 or 35 sq ft: About the size of a small garden shed. Boxes plus garden furniture, a bike or two, and a chest of drawers.

  • 40 or 50 sq ft: For when you're properly emptying a spare room: a bed taken apart, a small sofa or chairs, and boxes.

If you're not sure, tell us what you're clearing and we'll help you pick. We also have 75 and 120 sq ft rooms if Christmas is turning into a bigger job.

Why people use Rocket for it

Rocket Self Storage is on Manor Trading Estate in Benfleet, a short drive from Hadleigh, Canvey and Thundersley, and handy for Leigh-on-Sea, Rayleigh, Pitsea and Wickford too. Every room is indoors and on the ground floor, with drive-up access, so there are no stairs or lifts. You can come and go between 6am and 9pm, seven days a week, using your own PIN. The site has 24-hour CCTV and every room is individually alarmed. We're local and family-run, so when you call, you'll talk to Lee, who runs the place.
